Charles E Adams Sr

April 22, 1956 - April 8, 2020

Charles E. Adams Sr., of Elyria, Ohio, passed away peacefully at University Hospital of Elyria on April 8, 2020 at the age of 63 after battling a long illness.

He was born April 22, 1956 to Janice Adams and Sam Whatley Jr. (both deceased) in Troy, Alabama. He was a resident of Elyria most of his life. However, he resided in Cleveland, Ohio for 13 years.

Charles graduated from Midview High School in 1973 and played many sports, including baseball, basketball, and ran track.

Charles loved working with troubled youth. He worked at A Better Way in Elyria, Ohio for two years and Applewood Center, Cleveland, Ohio for nine years. He dedicated his time to encouraging young men to succeed in life.

Charles loved fishing and all sports. He especially loved baseball. He played softball for the Elyria Bull Dog for several years. His love for the sport was transposed to his son, Charles Jr. “CJ”. For over 12 years Charles assisted in coaching various summer leagues where his son played. He assisted in leading the teams to various championships over the years and he also coached the American All-Star League and Fall Ball. Charles constantly motivated the young men in the dugout and on the field. He could be heard throughout the field yelling “EVERYBODY GETS A HIT” and “DUCKS ON THE POND WANT TO COME HOME”. He was respected by everyone he encountered. In the summer of 2010 Charles was honored by the Euclid Pony League Baseball Association for his years of hard work and dedication to the league.

On September 15, 2009 Charles suffered a brain aneurysm and several strokes. Prior to his first surgery he promised CJ he would be here to raise him. That promise was kept. On August 23, 2010 Charles was featured on the Tom Joyner Morning Show during the segment “Real Fathers, Real Men”. The segment spotlighted the accomplishment of “Great Fathers”.

Despite his physical adversities, Charles remained joyfully proactive while residing at O’Neil Nursing Home in Elyria, Ohio. He stayed connected spiritually with his attendance of worship services and bible studies. He had a love for singing hymns. He also loved participating in games and crafts. He was a constant jokester and made everyone laugh and smile. His presence was infectious and will truly be missed.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory: his only son, Charles E Adams, Jr. of South Euclid, Ohio, who diligently visited him weekly and made sure his needs were met; his brother, Keith Adams (Norma) of North Ridgeville, Ohio; his sister-in-law, Yvonne Adams of Lorain, Ohio; his devoted friend, Norwetta Banks-Raines (mother of his son); a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Adams, and two sisters, Clementine Wilson and Jacquelyn Johnson.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions on public gatherings, private family funeral services will be held.
